How to write a resume that passes ATS and still reads well

Most applications are read twice: once by parsing software, once by a person with about seven seconds to spare. These are the choices that matter for both.

1. Pick the layout your reader expects

An applicant tracking system reads your resume as a stream of text. Single-column layouts with standard headings parse most reliably, which is why Simple, Docs Style and ATS Friendly keep decoration to a minimum. Designed layouts still export real text, so use them when a person screens first.

2. Lead every bullet with the result

Replace duties with outcomes. “Responsible for onboarding” becomes “Cut onboarding drop-off 34% by rebuilding the first-run flow”. Three to five bullets per role is enough; older roles need one or two.

3. Mirror the job posting's vocabulary

Parsers and recruiters both match on keywords. If the posting says “stakeholder management”, use that phrase rather than a synonym, and spell out acronyms once. Keep your skills section to genuine, current skills.

4. Respect the one-page rule until you can't

One page for students and early-career applicants, two once you have several relevant roles. Compact and Consulting are built for dense histories that must still fit one sheet.

5. Get the contact block right

Name, city and country, phone with country code, a professional email and a LinkedIn URL. A photo is expected across much of Europe and Asia and usually left off in the US, UK and Canada.

6. Export as PDF, not a screenshot

PDF preserves your layout and keeps the text selectable so parsers can read it. Name the file clearly — firstname-lastname-resume.pdf — because that is what a recruiter sees in their inbox.
